2 Days in Reykjavik: Geothermal Pools & Glaciers
Reykjavik is basically a small, colorful town masquerading as a capital city. If you only have two days, you use the city as a base to see the dramatic nature right outside it, and return at night for surprisingly good hot dogs and expensive beer.
Day-by-Day Snapshot
The Golden Circle
Take a day tour to Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss waterfall.
City & Spa
Hallgrímskirkja church, Harpa Concert Hall, and an afternoon at the Sky Lagoon.
- •Buying bottled water (Iceland's tap water is some of the best on earth).
- •Not showering naked before entering the public pools (it's mandatory).
- •Assuming you'll see the Northern Lights (it requires luck and clear skies).
- •Buying beer in supermarkets (it's low-alcohol; go to the state-run Vinbudin).
June for midnight sun, or October for Northern Lights chances.
Sky Lagoon, a better, closer alternative to the Blue Lagoon.
- Downtown (101): Walkable to everything, near the main church.
- Vesturbær: Quieter, near the public pools, very local.
Getting Around
Walk in the city. Rent a car or book bus tours for the nature day trips. The Flybus from Keflavik Airport is the easiest way into town.
Where to Eat
Baejarins Beztu Pylsur for the famous lamb hot dog. Braud & Co for cinnamon buns. Try fermented shark only if you want a terrible story to tell.
